They can though they still like a sheltered spot with plenty of leaf mould (multi-purpose if you cant get) added to the planting site.
I grew one outside for several years though the position I planted it in wasn't great as it was too exposed. I didn't die but it wasn't very happy with me for it.
It's now in shade in a sheltered garden (parents) and looks quite happy now.
