At what time of the year do you plant potatoes, new potatoes and what seeded do you use

Answers

Hi Peter and welcome to GoY. Potatoes are planted in spring, March/April time for harvesting from July through to September. There is a huge number of varieties of potato and it really depends how you want to be able to cook them. Also most of us are UK based and the varieties we know may not be available in the States.

Look for any variety labelled First Earlies or Second Earlies. then decide whether you want a creamy "waxy" texture or a "floury" texture - most people prefer the waxy one for earlies as the others tend to fall apart in the boiling. Many catalogues will say which each variety is. When to plant depends on where you live ie when the winter ends.

See if you can locate the varity ' Pink Fir Apple' they are
a funny shape, prolific cropper, have to be scrubbed before cooking, are a nice flavour.
Mature end of August, early September
and keep until Christmas.

Welcome to goy. try this link to find a supplier of seed potatoes in your part of USA. http://tawty.com/uspotatosuppliers.html lists varieties bof potatoes. Yukon Gold is a nice potato and we liked Norland. They also give planting instructions and timing. I had to laugh as it says the word Tawty is the Scottish word for potato. East Lothian residents may say Tawty but where I was brought up in Morayshire it is spelled and pronounced as Tattie.
