I have white spongy 'growths' on the leaves and trunk of my Acer Pulmatum Dissectum. I have also noticed them on the stem of a neighbours hydrangea. What on earth are they and how do I get rid of them?

Not sure about the spongy growth on the leaves? On older material like the stems it could be Lichen which would be relatively harmless. Need a picture Jomills. :-)

wonder if they are the 'dead' scale insects with the cotton wool stuff underneath them.

my acer tree branches are coverd in Lichen of different colours but as the others say the leaves sound a bit worrying.
