I have had a cherry blossum tree in my garden for over ten years, it this year it has produced fruit for the first time.
I recently planted a smaller (self fertilising) cherry tree next to the older one. Is this the reason why ?

yes as the self fertile pollen will also pollinate the ornamental. They probably wont be any good to eat but give one a go and you might get a nice surprise.
