A very old climbing rose which produce prolific white roses, was pruned last winter, but this summer did not flower and only produced suckers? Can you tell me why? Feel so upset as it was so lovely to look at. Thank you

Hi Moon growe. Thank you for your response, unfortunately it was pruned very hard so just wondering if it will come back, and is there anything I can do?

Also by hard pruning, you cut away the wood where this year's buds were developing. If it does come back hard prune no more than 1 in 3 stems each year, that way you always have two thirds ready to flower.

Hi Dorrie and welcome to GoY. Just how hard was the rose pruned? Most climbing roses don't take to well to a hard pruning and the fact you had suckers coming up this year suggests it may have been pruned below the level of the graft.
