I was given a small, varigated house plant for my birthday and it came with no identifaction or care instructions. Will there be any knowledgable garden expert out there who can tell me what it is and how to care for it?

Hi, it's hard to tell from the photo's, but looks as if it could be a species of Dracaena, there are about 40 species in the genus, a photo showing the whole plant may get you a more definitive id, Dracaena are native to the Canaries, and tropical africa, and needs a minimum temp of about 55f, Derek.

Don't know what it is called, but I love the variegated foliage.

It is a Dracaena but there are so many varieties, it's difficult to tell which one is which these days.

As Derek says, they're pretty much a tropical houseplant and require bright light out of direct sun, decent humidity, 10 degrees + during winter and a monthly feed during summer.

Thank you Badfish......I will keep it on gravel and keep the gravel moist and feed once a month. Also keep it in bright light. It has lovely varigated floliage.
