Do you mean Dianthus? There are quite a few types but most are sun loving with narrow grey-green leaves and are suitable for calcareous soils (alkaline) that are free drained. By dead heading, they will keep flowering for longer but this varies between individual types. Still worth doing as like most plants, they are trying to reproduce and will produce back up flowers if older fading flowers (seed pods) are removed.
