having just moved in my lawn is very hard with very long wide open gaps in the soil of one inch plus wide its had plenty of watering but has made no difference i would be greatfull for any advice

Probably clay soil and if you're in the south or east/north east, we've had no decent rain for weeks - unless you left your hose running for a month, it would make little difference. The gaps will close when we have a return to wet, cool weather.

Agree with Bamboo, you should see my back garden right now and no amount of watering will work. Also the gaps hardly close over winter :(

You could top dress with fine soil and wash it in, giving your lawn a better chance of recovery when we get some real rain. 0.5 of an inch for June here.
