algarve, Portugal
my onions are still so small (at least most of them), yet a gardenbook says it will take some 2 or 3 weeks more untill there long leaves are brown and then ready to pick, also the book says not to water anymore, but here in the algarve it is now very hot. Can somebody give advise ?

All I can say is that my onions (from sets) are still very small this year, although I have looked after them well with weeding and watering. The top growth is still very green and they are growing strongly so I suspect they won't start to mature for several weeks.
In the Algarve I would expect yours to be far ahead of ours, so I wonder how early you planted them. If I were you I would continue to water while the leaves are green but as soon as the tops start to change colour, stop watering.
