My lawn seems to be dying in places. when I tried to replace areas with new turf , the soil beneath the old turf isbone dry and white in places.

It's due to the dry weather. It needs watering (sprinkler system)? fairly regularly if no rain. New turf needs well watering.

I don't know where you are in the UK, but anywhere in the south we don't have green grass any more, it's all brown and yellow - we have a drought, could that be your problem too?
