how do you prune a old plum tree - masses of new branches this year but not mush fruit - but there was masses of fruit last year.

Mine had no fruit last year although it was smothered in flowers. Too cold for pollinators, I think. You need to thin out the fruit if it sets lots, leave one every 4 inches or so. This way it will fruit every year.

Welcome sps, I would firstly take out any old dead wood, then what I normally do is remove any vertical growth during the growing season, this means you're not taking out the fruiting wood by mistake. As for fruiting sometimes you do get a lean year or it could be if you had a frost when the tree was in bloom.
