If you have been keeping it inside, it may be too warm. The ones sold in stores are weak - they are forced to turn red at the expense of being strong and healthy. A cold greenhouse would be better than inside for next year, and they naturally turn red by decreasing light levels. Mine is now a strong red, but the lowest temperature has been 9C. It is also over 10 feet tall and not as bushy as a store bought. I would suggest you look around your area, and if you find someone who has one outside, get a cutting from them - they root very easily.

Wylie they don't grow outside in the UK :)

putting into the dark wont work now it needs 10-12 weeks of this dark treatment and as you move into spring the quality of the light isn't correct either. So no colourful bracts this year but you may still get the actual flowers.

Since Wildlifebalcony is in the southern UK, they might grow. The plant is on borrowed time, so it wouldn't hurt to experiment. The trick is to keep them frost free, but cool in the fall & winter.

thanks for the help guys

No chance unfortunately Wylie! They won't survive below about 45 degrees F and we get lots of days in the lower 30s.

Sad but true, Wylie. They just barely survive here in the low desert, and we have far warmer winters than any part of the UK.

if they cant survive than why sold in the uk?

They're sold as house plants Wildlife! And also sold as 'seasonal' at this time of year, not intended/expected to survive much beyond 12th night!

And they can be killed by just taking them from the supermarket or garden centre, to your car without a lot of protection, Derek.

Agree Urbanite these are indoor decorative plants that you compost once they start to look droopy. WLB there are huge numbers of plants sold just to be enjoyed for a month, or even less. When you think that a bouquet of cut flowers can cost a tenner then buying something for 3 - 4 pounds that will last for over a month is a no brainer. We bought 5 Cyclamun persicum from Lidl's in October and had them in a container on the bench under the kitchen window for weeks. They are now indoors and still flowering and total cost for the five was less than £15...

Poinsettias or Euphorbia pulcherrima is a tropical shrub. Ive seen them growing as weeds by the roadside in the caribbean and get to a bushy 6 feet tall.
They love warmth and humidity and hate cold, wet draughty conditions.
I would think that even in a well insulated unheated greenhouse, they would suffer severely after a decent frost...even "darn sarf"

I take it you have kept it from last year. if you haven't given it 14hrs of continuous dark since about October then it wont go on to produce the pink upper leaves/bracts. the flowers are in fact small relatively inconspicuous things. Whilst interesting they are grown for their showy bracts.
I persevered one year but decided at the price they were they were better chucked and bought compact and fresh.
