I have a large Viburnum Tinus which needs to be hard pruned to about half its size. I understand spring is the best time to do this. But if one prunes back to points beyond the foliage, will it survive, or is that too harsh? I know some shrubs won't take that level of pruning in one go.

I wouldn't cut it back now as it should be flowering, or about to.
Shape it up after it has finished flowering.

You can do it now, or some time during the winter - this is one of a variety of shrubs which can be renovated by stooling, meaning cutting very low down, and recover and grow again, but it will benefit from a feed with a good fertiliser in spring, as growth begins.
