I have a new Hornbeam hedge(planted winter 2013/14)

Can anyone tell me whether I should prune the young plants, they were planted as 12" whips and are now approx 3 feet tall. The leaves are brown and just beginning to fall now. Many thanks.

If the hornbeam are for hedging then it's a good idea to give them a light trim on the top, cutting back the leaders a little and likewise on the sides this will make the hedge more compact, as the years roll by keep the base slightly wider and taper the trimming to the desired height, it's important to get light at the base of the hedge so it does not become sparse, the same method can be used if you are using the hornbeam for single planting, they are great for topiary.
