can i prune a main side limb that was originally the tree from the beginning.. last summer i had another tree come straight up approx 15 ft.

Most trees have a root stock similar to the a rose that hads been grafted with a named variety.With what you have described the named variety has died or has gone weak and the root stock has taken over, if you are happy with what has replaced your original tree , yes you can cut off if you want to.
