Hubby wants to plant a heavily scented shrub of sorts under this tree, only thing is it will be in the shade , any ideas?

Sarcococca varieties would be okay there, but, though fragrant, they flower early in the year

i'll shoot him in a minute the lord and master now says he wants something that flowers between may and the end of september.
Having a camera up his wotsit has sent him do dally today either that or the heat has got to him

I guessed as much, which is why I mentioned when sarcococca flowers, lol! I can't think of anything that will tolerate that amount of shade and be fragrant in summer - maybe someone else can. You could always cut back the tamarisk after its flowered - unless that's a shady spot for other reasons, that would allow light in.
