My husband(a botanist/environmental scientist) successfully uses glyphosate/round up etc to clear japanese knotweed from the edge of our plot. The secret to effective use is to spray when the plant is fully grown so that the herbicide is drawn down by the sap to the roots.

To the best of my knowledge there are no applications for japanese knot weed! Just keep cutting it back hard.
