Pittosporum tenuifolium [Silver Sheen] in pots.
What has caused many healthy leaves to fall leaving the tree is looking sparse. Many new leaves are apparent.

How big is the pot; how big is the plant and how long has the plant been in the pot?
My first guess would be that it's under stress by being in too small a pot and second guess (though you don't say where you are) would be that a sudden frost has made the stress worse.
