I am going to try to grow verbena from seed this year, is it a difficult seed to germinate?

Unfortunately though verbena seeds are small they do not germinate easily... I suggest you use a propagation mat to improve germination rates. Start Verbena seeds indoors six to eight weeks before the last frost in your area. Takes two to four weeks to germinate.

Do you mean the annual or perennial sort of Verbena? Verbena bonariensis is easy to germinate and will seed itself around once you have it in the garden.

not sure which ones it is you are planning to grow but some do germinate easier than others. I have grown trailing verbena, V bonariensis and V hastate from seed successfully. seed size has no relation to ease of germination, if that were the case I wouldn't have hundreds of sycamore seeds germinating every spring. :o)

"The smaller the seed is, the easier it is to grow"
After 33 years of being propagator, looking after a huge palm house and being head gardener, that is the biggest pile of horse s*** i've ever read

True. Ever had a problem germinating nasturtiums?

Nope, nor sweet peas, or ricinus or runner beans blah blah. Begonias, lobelia, petunias, nicotiana et al can be problematic

I can never get Nicotiana to germinate well apart from the odd ones, lobelia is just as weird except the ones that self sow in cracks and then they are in the wrong place and never seem to transplant.

oh wow, really badfish? I have had experience to you know and I know the difference between growing a bigger seed and a smaller seed e.g: i tried to grow fox gloves (smaller seeds) they are very easy to grow, but when I tried to grow nasturtiums they did have a little trouble, and so with all others I tried to grow the bigger seeds have always been the hardest, there that's where I got the horse shit from, actually growing stuff, you should try it some time.

Bwahahahaha
I shouldn't feed the trolls really.

WLB the size of the seed has no relationship to whether it is easy or difficult to grow. Tree peony seeds are large and grow easily, primula seeds are small yet some of the alpine varieties are almost impossible to germinate. You made a generalisation based on your experience, unfortunately it isn't correct.

thanks for correction, it is my experience that I rely on when answering questions, but I stand corrected.

If I'm not sure whether a species is easy to germinate or not I tend to look up the info in books or on the RHS site.

not at all the seeds they have are small and the smaller the seed is, the easier it is to grow.
