how do i get a bamboo plant out of a pot that its been growing in for a few years its completely pot bound?

Soak thoroughly, as Ilex says, if in a ceramic pot, and then a couple of strong men, one to pull the pot away, the other to pull the topgrowth in the other direction...

Cut or saw the pot open if plastic. The rhizomes will have distorted the sides so the plant will be wedged in. If in a ceramic or clay pot then a length dunk in water should help to soften and lubricate for removal.
