Hi,
Can anyone please tell me why I am getting these long 'seed' like grass's coming up in my lawn.?..And what exactly are they?..Also,is there any sort of treatment I can give my lawn to get rid of them.?.I had aerated this lawn in the spring of this year, and hollow tined it and introduced a lot of new soil and sharp sand etc.But now I'm getting these really unsightly long grass's almost everywhere on this lawn...P.S. I mow this lawn on a regular weekly basis,so the whole lawn is kept short. But these grass's keep coming up.

I think it is a rye grass, Sbg, and is part of the mix of lawn grass seed. No need to get rid of it, harryo.

Many thanks to Seaburngirl & Bulbaholic for their information with regards my 'seed' grass on my lawn..I had found that when I mowed this lawn with my cylinder mower it's blades just 'bent' these grass's and tended to 'strip' the sides off them to leave 'yellow' grass lenghs which were very unsighlty,so I now have to just mow it with my flymo machine instead.
Many thankds once again.

Cylinder mowers are by far the best if you have a 'good' lawn but if there are any difficulties like plantain stems or rye stalks then a rotary mower does a better job.

I came on to say use a Flymo - that does the trick, but you have to forgo the stripes!

Hi,All,
Just an update on my rye grass problem;..
Since I had this rye grass problem in my lawn,I have used my flymo mower a few times, and these rye grass's now don't come up in my lawn at all..Why I have no real idea, but my three lawns now look superb, and very very healthy and green, almost like new turf in quality now.
Again, many thanks to all who wrote to me about this original problem.

You'll only have the problem in June/early July, when that particular grass wants to flower - after that, its flowering time is over, so no more long stems to deal with.

yes this is the flower of the grass that makes up the lawn. they are very springy and when the lawn mower goes over the top they are pushed flat and then when you pass by they spring back up. You can snip them off if they annoy you. It is probably a rye grass.
