I'm growing marmande tomatos outside in pots. The fruit is only just starting to grow. Is this normal?

Marmande is recommended as an outdoor variety as it can abort in the high temperatures of a greenhouse, so you should succeed. One way of getting earlier fruit is to keep the plant in a smaller pot until the first truss is in flower or even beginning to set and only then planting it out in the larger pot or the ground.
Marmande usually succeeds with few problems, and as there is plenty of time to grow and ripen fruit I wouldn't worry, assuming your position is fairly warm and sheltered up there in Lancashire.
