I was given the fruit trees about 6 weeks ago, they looked like dead sticks just under a meter high. i do not think the cherry is a dwarf but as i did not have a suitable prepared area for them thought the pots would start them off

Thanks for the tip off, MG. Would have been easier if you'd responded under your original question, Bosun, but anyway, on the subject of your cherry tree - they tend to want to put out shallow, horizontal roots for a fair distance as well as a few main ones going down deep into the ground. Your cherry cannot do this in a pot, which might be why it's not doing well.
