Why does my four year old chaenomeles japonica Ida not flower?

I can't find a cultivar named 'Ida', but no matter - couple of questions -have you ever pruned it back, and if so, when, and is it planted in a very shady spot or in full sun (assuming its in the ground)? Has it grown well otherwise?
