Desfontainia spinosa (note the correct spelling so you can Google it) is a very attractive, moderately hardy (to about -10C) small shrub that's native to the southern reaches of the Andes. When not in flower it looks almost exactly like a small Holly, but the hummingbird-pollinated flowers are long, tubular and orange/red.
It requires a well-drained acid soil and a sheltered position in semi-shade. I grow one on the side of a moss bank (where the drainage is very good) and under the protection of overhanging trees.

Desfontainia spinosa - cool, lime free soil, dappled shade, moist air and very sheltered position.
