this is not a question, but a solution to a problem some of you may experience
feeding the birds can sometimes bring unwanted visitors to the garden (rats). we solved this problem by using one of the large dome squirrel protectors. we drilled small holes in it for drainage and then placed it upside down and about 15 inches below the feeder on the pole ( our poles have the screw on feeders) this catches any seeds thrown out by the birds so it doesn't attract the rats, the surplus seed then can be placed on a bird table.

But then the ground feeding birds miss out. Our resident pheasant does a very good job of clearing up the spilled seeds, as do the collared doves.

we find that the collared doves, blackbirds robins, go into the domes and feed from there once they have got use to them being there,

thanks everyone, I rather deter the rats then put poison down and risk harming other wildlife, if you want to encourage wildlife into the garden and there is easy food about, unfortunately the rats will come, and I don't want them in my garden.

your spot on with your reasoning taz and know rats get harmed .

I agree noseypotter, we don't have to kill them just because we don't like them, we have to compromise, live and let live is my motto, ( just not in my garden please)

well they didn't introduce there selves into this country ? you've got to admire them really as they are opertunists just like us .

I used to do the same to stop the fallen seed from making a mouldy mess on my lawn. It worked well enough until the weather destroyed the dome. We used to have so many goldfinches coming to our old garden and what a mess they would make!
