I bought a Juniper x Pfitzeriana Carberry Gold last week. Supposedly grows to about 4ft high with 4ft spread in 20 years.
Also got Chamaecyparis pisifera Boulevard which is silvery (ultimately a lot bigger) - they're both going to get bonsaied.
I'm not a particular fan of conifers but it was on the half price end of season shelf so I reckoned that I wasn't going to risk much for a fiver.

Why have you decided against the Goldcrest (presumably you mean Cupressus macrocarpa Goldcrest)?

Hi, Tsuga canadensis 'albospica' can be kept at around 4-5ft, which encourages a bushier habit, or Tsuga canadensis 'Jeddeloh' is a small evergreen rounded shrub, green leaves with 2 whitish bands underneath, and bright green new growth, Derek.

Hi Urbanite, I am worried that the Goldcrest are going to grow much too big so decided not to use them but thanks for the other advice will take a look at the conifers you have mentioned.

You might want to consider plants besides conifers. There are other options for year-round colour/interest

Hi Urbanite, yes I have been looking around at plants, went down to my local nursery today and came home with a tree peony and a dwarf cherry, neither evergreen but beautiful but there had lots of other options so will be going back with pen and notebook to work out which would work better in my garden. Suggestions if you have some would be much appreciated, thanks
