something destroyed all the leaves on a first year gooseberry bush. Buda beginning to show now (March 2015). Appreciate advise on measures to take to avoid it happening again.

It will have been gooseberry sawfly - little caterpillars that can do lots of damage in a short time. If you don't have many bushes the best thing is total vigilance. Keep your eyes open for newly hatched ones and remove the leaves they are on. They will be on the undersde of the leaves while they are newly hatched. They are green at first and then develop into more speckly colouring. You'll want to avoid sprays if possible because of the fruit but if necessary you can use any of the bug sprays that say they can be used on edibles. We used to use Derris but that was a long time ago.

The damage looks devastating but as you are finding it doesn't seem to do long term damage.

On the other hand the East Malling Research Station is advertising for 10,000 live ones for research purposes!
