I grow three different varities of mint in pots near to my back door and each year in late autumn I will
cut back to ground level and each spring young, fresh growth appears. You may think about putting a pot of mint in a cold greenhouse and you will get lovely leaves to pick earlier. By the way apart from mint I also grow rosemary and sage in pots and chives. The chives gives me lovely flowers, which I believe are edible and the fresh leaves too.
