Agapanthus. I have bought 6 agapanthus, should I put them into small pots or straight into large ones, as I believe they grow quite big.

Hi, I don't believe this thing about them needing to be have their roots restricted, I have a deciduous 1 planted in the border, with no root restriction whatsoever, and it gets bigger, and gets more flowers every year, so I would plant in a pot appropriate to the size of plant, and pot on as necessary, the deciduous species are usually more hardy than the evergreen species, most of them being completely hardy, so can safely be planted out in the garden, Derek.

Whether they do or don't need there roots restricting, they always do well in pots when they are totally root bound and congested and flower really well, that's what I have noted over many years.

Thanks for your replies, I shall have plenty to think over before I decide on the pots.

But they have matured to a good flowering age by that time - cause and causality. They really do not need to be root bound to flower well, they just need to be mature enough.
I would plant in the biggest pot available.

we had a talk at our HPS group from a major grower and his advice was to mimic what they do in the wild. he said they grow in rocky outcrops in free draining soil. so some root restriction is the norm. but he also went on to say in a border the mature plants are large and are restricting in the centre of the clump.
I would pot them into pots but do you want 6 individual pots or one big one? If they are the size of the ones I bought from Parkers 2 years ago they are about the thickness of 2 pencils. I put them into square 1lt pots. they are happy enough and growing well but they haven't flowered yet.

I would put them all into one large pot. Agapanthus like to have their roots restricted and will flower better this way - just don't forget to feed them.
