I have a 30 year old wisteria which flowers well but only from the top and I'm wondering whether it's ok to reduce the height by about half to encourage more side shoots further down. Can anyone advise please?

Wisterias respond really well to hard pruning, although you will lose this year's flowers if you do it now. You would normally prune twice a year, once in winter and again in summer after flowering, to keep it flowering well and stop it getting out of control.
