We have bamboo in our garden which is spreading rapidly. How can we either contain it or if this is not possible, get rid of it?

Get rid if you can.

Thanks. It may have to be the weedkiller although we do quite like it - if only it didn't spread like wildfire!

It spreads horribly, popping up dozens of feet from where you thought it was, and it's impossible to get out with a spade or fork, as the roots just below ground level are like iron bars. It's exciting on a bonfire too as the sections of stem make a series of bangs when they burn, like firecrackers.

« should these still be in flower, it was nice to find these today
Digging it out with a JCB is one option, Roundup weedkiller is another. "Bamboo" has answered a similar question a while ago with a suggested containment method involving a deep barrier, but I suggest you get rid of it.
