Or on vines like grape vines - adventitious roots sometimes occur on the top growth, and its often a sign of a problem at root level with the plant, though not always.

They can enable air to reach the other roots and they can sometimes help to anchor the plant to nearby branches or rocks. And I'm guessing that in air plants and epiphytes for example they will absorb some moisture from the atmosphere.

they can also be the fine root system that forms from a typical tap root and they are anchorage and water uptake in function.

The best examples of adventitious roots are the mango trees which are in swamps which are tidal. They support the trees when the tide is out.
