I have just bought two astrantia bulbs but they look like they have already been in growth and there is what looks like to stem that has been cut off and at the other end what look like pink shoots. I have planted them with the pink shoots up and the stems down. is that right?

Astrantia are herbaceous perennials, not bulbs. Are they in a packet with a bit of peat? There should be some roots and some shoots, the shoots normally would be pointing upwards. But don't worry, they will find their own way no matter which way up you have planted them.

the new growth does tend to be pinky so it sounds as if you have them the right way up. :o)
