How to grow a lemon tree

Answers

Maybe a bit more info would be helpful....such as do you want to grow it from a pip or have you bought a plant and where do you intend to keep it ???

I grow citrus trees, mainly lemon and orange and they are difficult to grow unless you have a very sunny place to overwinter them. They won't tolerate frost so they have to be brought into a warm bright place during the cold months.

The other thing that they need is lots of humidity. So keeping them in a living room with modern central heating for example over winter even in a sunny position is not ideal. You could stand the pot on an over-sized saucer with damp gravel and mist the the leaves with rain water or de-ionised water each day

If you mean from a pip? It probably will grow but the chances of it bearing fruit are very slim and it could take up to 10 years to fruit if it ever did. However, if it did fruit you could have found a new species of lemon, but it's a 1 in 10,000 chance of this happening, but you never know

I plant lots of lemon pips and they almost always grow. After about 2 years I use these plants as root stock and graft a branch from a lemon tree that I want to grow. The scion (cutting that I grafted onto the rootstock) takes over and I end up with a lemon tree above the graft which is an exact clone of the donor plant. This tree usually bears fruit in 1 - 2 years.

I have grafted lemon, orange and lime branches onto the same root stock to create a fruit cocktail tree. The lemons, oranges and limes all growing on the same tree.

I'm very fortunate to have a large south facing conservatory to overwinter my citrus plants so this helps.
