Urbanite, should we wait 6 weeks before we feed the bulbs? I've already started feeding them and usually do it every week for 6 weeks. From what you say I think I've got it mixed up and feeding more than I need to.

they need to be fed whilst in leaf. Where I have some in the beds I sprinkle granular feed around them as they start to put on the show so the roots are able to take up the minerals with the water.

If you wait to feed until the leaves are dead it is too late. Start feeding as soon as the flower goes over. Don't cut the foliage back or tie it up in a knot just let it die back naturally. You can, if you want, lift after the foliage has died back but I think it is better to leave the bulbs in the ground.

I am not the most patient gardener waiting for daffs to die down so I tried something that Alys did on gardeners world a few year ago. I use aquatic baskets and plant the bulbs quite close together. I plant the whole basket in the autumn and then lift the basket after flowering. I then move the baskets to an unobtrusive area and keep them watered for the next six weeks. Once the foliage dies down I leave the basket to dry out and then repot the basket in September. Even though roots have come through the base they have survived and multiplied. This then frees up space to plant the summer flowers.
I noticed in our local garden centre that they are now selling bulb baskets.

In the UK we tend to leave daffodils in the ground to naturalise (ie, multiply and spread). They should at least be left for about 6 weeks until the foliage have died down naturally and then given a weak feed with a general fertiliser to build up the bulb's food store. Don't tie up the foliage - it may look untidy but it's the best way to help the bulb rebuild after the effort of flowering.
