We have a type of wood beetle which appears a bit later on in late summer on our cooking apple tree which then burrows into the apple!
It's an old tree but wonderful apples.Do we spray or feed from the roots and with what please.

It's probably codling moth - the larvae burrow into the fruits as they develop. Wood beetles don't damage apples, though you may very well find a wood louse or other type beetle nibbling on previously damaged or rotten apples.

You can get a pheremone trap - erect that in the tree and it will reduce the number of maggoty apples you get, but will also alert you when is the best time to spray. for more information, Google 'codling moth' and select the RHS entry.
