Some of my tulips have come up with very small flower heads or just a very dark spot where the flower should be. The leaves are fine and healthy, but the flowers are stunted. It seems to have happened mostly to my purple variegated ones (can't remember the name).

I think you may be referring to red riding hood tulips with purple and green striped leaves. Mine have all a bud in the centre and are flowering but the stem is less than 3 inches tall. Look strange but at least have flowered. Definitely dwarf!!

Some tulips just diminish over the years. They also need at least 8 weeks of continuous 45 F degrees of cold stratification. Otherwise they will not bloom or will be stunted. Refresh your bed each fall with a few new bulbs.

this is probably a fault as the bud was developing. could be down to lack of water last spring when they were forming or this spring as they were developing. water and feed the bulbs well this spring and hopefully it wont be a problem next year.
