I have been told this plant was popular with the Romans who grew it in their gardens here in the UK. Is that true? I bought a plant from the Roman Villa remains at Fishbourne.

Not sure if it was that particular variety, but the Romans certainly grew Sage as a culinary herb, Salvia officinalis.
