My neighbour and I share a wall. Ivy grows on the wall and whilst I like mine to cover an ugly wall my neighbour abhors it and cuts its along the middle of the wall but then throws the cuttings into my garden. Should he??

well he does have the right to cut anything off his side but certainly doesnt have the right to throw it all into your garden, he is just being petty in my opion, have you tried to talk to him , other than that im not sure what you can do without falling out over it, but he sure is in the wrong , good luck

Yes he can. What the law states is that he can cut off stuff that intrudes on his garden from your side of the fence, but it is still yours and he can throw it back ! I think that Sanbaz has the right idea in trying to talk it through with him and work it out.

I think that in law he is actually supposed to give you back the clippings. This always seems a bit cheeky to me, especially if the neighbour does not know that I have been 'pruning' his trees!

Bulbaholic is right - he's supposed to give you the prunings back, so your neighbour's following the law to the letter.

Ivy is like marmite, you either love it or hate it!..he is lucky it is a brick wall, if a wooden fence the Ivy would find it's way through it and he would be for ever cutting it back, Vileve

yes but he isnt following the law beattie as he is throwing them back and not giving them, being a bit nasty i thinks

While it would be better if he talked to you about it, he's not doing anything wrong.

If I pruned back a tree or shrub and felt the need to return the prunings to the grower I would probably just toss into their garden too. Given that we are talking about ivy which is invasive and will damage the wall I imagine the neighbour is fed up of having to cut it back!

This all assumes the ivy is growing, or rooted, on your side of the wall, Guest, and everyone is correct, the cuttings he takes are yours, not his. Perhaps you should be more considerate yourself and cut the ivy off at the top before it gets to the point where he has to do it for you - its your responsibility to keep your plants within bounds.
