Can you tell me what I should do about the shoots that are growing up from the base of these two apple trees, the leaves are a red/brown on the one tree, green on the other, they are not the same variety. They were 3yrs old when we bought them, which makes them now 10. They have only ever produced one or 2 apples per tree, but this year the one tree is laden with blossom. I have been unable to get a photo added, but if needed I will try and send one separately.

Your apple tree will have been grafted onto a basic rootstock, they all are, and the new growth is from the rootstock. They should be removed as early as possibe by pushing down at the base of the growth so that it is 'torn' off with a bit of a heel. You should do this as soon as you notice further growths.
