Would strongly recommend growing in the ground. Once established it will then need no care and attention at all, whereas in a container it will need feeding and watering.

Before you plant in the ground you need to check what kind of soil you have. If any of your neighbours are successfully growing a rhododendron or an azalea or has a truly blue flowered hydrangea you should be OK. If nobody has one it might be worth doing a soil test - you can buy kits or a metre quite cheaply and it is well worth the trouble. Acidity is measured on a pH scale and if your soil is any higher than pH 6 (which shows clearly on the test) you will need to dig a larger than usual planting hole and fill it with ericaceous compost, which you can get from any garden centre.

Agree you are better off planting in the ground. Partial sun-semi shade.

R. luteum is a very nice gift, Joan. It is a medium sized shrub growing to about 3ft high and maybe 5 or 6 feet wide; it has yellow flowers now.
It needs to be grown in a neutral (ours is neutral) to acid soil or in an ericaceous compost. Sun or semi-shade and sheltered from the strongets winds. In the garden is much better than in a container.
