Don't use ivy - the roots of that will expand and crowd out the Acer. I wouldn't use anything at all myself, I'd just put the Acer in a pot two or three sizes larger than that its currently in, but if I did plant it in a larger pot, I'd probably just use summer bedding which can be removed, replaced with winter bedding rather than anything permanent, until the Acer is larger and can occupy the pot alone.

I'm with Bamboo....they are specimen trees and should be displayed as such...on their own !!!!

Nothing else would be comfortable with the acer. It is a tree and would take up all the moisture. Anyway, as above, they look much better on their own as a specimen tree. Use an interesting looking top dressing if you need something to contrast with it.

I'd use heucheras or heucherellas or tierellas if the tree is dense and small ornamental sedges. you could also try miniture hostas.

OK you will need plants that like dappled sun and compliment the tree form. A few I think would look really nice are; Camellia Japonica "April Dawn", Bleeding Hearts, Peony.
