Do you have to remove the flower from a geranium if the plant hasn't grown big yet

I tend to remove the buds from bedding geraniums [pelargoniums actually] until they are about 9-12" tall then leave them alone apart from dead heading them.

Do you mean a hardy geranium, or a bedding Pelargonium type of plant? You don't need to remove flowers from the hardy one, someone else will advise about bedding plants.
