We are looking for a covering for our garden area that looks nice but we don't want slate or anything sharp that will cut our dogs paws can you help with ideas

You can get thbem in other shapes than sqyare if looking attractive is importsnt, and you could also havbe a few pots. Or leave out a paver here and there and plant something tough in it.

Do you mean as a mulch on the soil in borders and beds, or the whole of the garden generally?

Quite honestly if the area is going to be shared with a dog then go for paving slabs or pavers that are easy to wash down. There are plenty of these on the market that are made to imitate various natural stones (or made from reconstituted stone).
