The areas of grass nearest to my brick walls have died off. Is this because of radiated heat from the walls (it's babout a 20cm strip) and what would you suggest I can do to prevent this? Thanks

More likely to be a lack of water, with the walls effectively creating a "rain shadow" and preventing any water from reaching the soil.

if its a new build it will be the lime in the cement . you shouldnt plant anything to close to a wall realy as the footings are always wider . id be inclined to make that into a flower bed or a path or patio etc.
