I have a Canadian maple variegated acer tree. I noticed that the leaves were starting to curl. It did not look very happy. Upon closer examination there appeared to be rodent branches growing throughout the tree, ie. different leaves which were not variegated. We have since removed these. Could they be suckers and causing the tree to be undernourished?

Variegated maples do often produce branches that have reverted back to plain leaves - the variegation is unstable. Removing the branches as you have done is the usual treatment.
