My runner beans have failed fir the 2nd year. I had plenty of flowers but very few beans, there are lots of small stringy bits where the beers should be. Before planting the beans I dug in plenty of compost and manure

Are the stringy bits the remains of the flower stalks? If so it sounds as though perhaps the flowers weren't fertilised. Are you short of bees where you live? There are two new varieties of runner bean that are said to be self fertilising - worth investigating?

Hi Rich and welcome to GoY, where do you live in the UK? We can't grow runner beans here in Moray but can grow french climbing beans.
