I have this purple plant growing in my yard I thought was interesting but not sure what it is it stands 6' tall and if anyone knows what it is I would appreciate it.

I agree with Badfish. You might know it as Coxcomb or Celosia Argentea.

Thanks Everyone it definitely looks like Purple Amaranthus cruentus but wonder how it ended up in my yard since i've never seen anything like this in Northern America (chicago) seeing how we have extremely cold winters. Maybe it dropped out of my composter - curious

I have a bed of petunias that sprang up voluntarily - perfectly color coordinated better then what I can do. Most likely it's your feathered friends.

Looks like one of the grain amaranths, Delamorajc, Amaranthus cruentus is a good candidate. Related to, but not synonymous with, Celosia.
