Hmm, a photo would have been useful, but more info if not. Passion fruits are the product from Passiflora edulis, which does not grow in Britain (not warm enough) other than in warm greenhouses: its fruits are round. Passiflora caerulea, though, does grow here and does produce fruits which are eggshaped, but I wouldn't eat them if they're green - they need to be orange and ripe or they could upset your stomach. To be honest, they're not very palateable anyway, if that's what you've been given.
